Hallmarks
My jewellery is hallmarked in accordance with the Hallmarking act 1973.
In the UK it is illegal to sell or describe anything as Gold, Silver, Platinum or Palladium (precious metals) over a certain weight unless it is hallmarked.
Only an Assay office can apply a hallmark, and there are four Assay offices in the UK. London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh.
Commitment to Quality
In order to use the services of an Assay office, a jeweller must be registered with the Assay office of their choice. I have been registered with Sheffield Assay office since 1990, which means my hallmarked jewellery carries the mark of the Yorkshire rose-representing Sheffield Assay office.
A hallmark is the only way to guarantee the fineness of a precious metal.
